We received a grant from the state of Texas in 2003 to begin a program of AP Spanish at Johnston Middle School. Native speakers of Spanish as well as Dual Language students are allowed to apply for the program in the spring of their 7th grade year. Entrance requirements include a test, a written essay, and an interview in Spanish. Also, students must be passing all subjects, have good grades in conduct, and submit a teacher recommendation. If qualified, they will become a part of the AP class in 8th grade.
By passing the 8th grade AP Spanish class, students receive credit for the 4th year of high school Spanish – Spanish IVAP. They will work on advanced grammar, extensive vocabulary, and the skills necessary to be able to pass the AP SPANISH LANGUAGE EXAM which is given in May of the 8th grade. If they pass this exam, they will not only receive credit for Spanish IV AP, but also credit for Spanish I, Spanish II, and Spanish III – four full credits for high school Spanish. Also, most colleges give credit at their universities for success on AP Exams.
