The Language Arts department at Johnston takes the "arts" portion of its name seriously. Students receive an education that not only brings out their creative talent, but also prepares them for the rigors of high school and beyond.
Students in English and reading classes work from a variety of sources. In preparation for advanced courses in high school, students read novels ranging from young adult literature such as Holes, The Giver, and The Outsiders to more challenging works such as To Kill a Mockingbird, Shakespearian Sonnets, and Diary of a Young Girl.
Like the reading program, the writing program at Johnston prepares students for high school. Students not only receive a foundation in grammar and syntax, but they also have opportunities to write poetry, personal essays, critical papers, plays, and short stories. By eighth grade, students are responding critically to texts and thesis questions in full-length compositions supported by local and national organizations, including the Houston Chronicle, scholastic Books, and the local rotary club. Johnston had district winners in the Scholastic Writing Contest, while several other students' short stories received honorable mentions in the Houston Chronicle's writing contest for young adults. Students can also work on the Johnston yearbook, report for the Johnston website, and write for the school newspaper.
Students have many opportunities to grow and challenge themselves while at Johnston. The Language Arts Department is proud to help foster Johnston's environment of excellence. |
