On May 7-8, Johnston Middle School students competed at the State History fair, labeled Texas History Day, in Austin, Texas. The theme for 2009-10: Innovation in History: Impact and Change. Mrs. Peggy Given, History department Chairperson and Mr. Deric Barber, 6th grade history teacher, chaperoned the students to Austin.
These students competed at the school, district and region level before advancing to the state level. Malcolm Gifford-Weaver, Christian Stuart, Chandler Dean, John Guttman, Ethan Orkin, Misty Birtcher, Caitlin Rhoades, and Cassie O'Sullivan were selected to present their projects at the state level.
The following students placed at the state level in the following categories and we are very proud of their accomplishments!
- Cassie O'Sullivan and Caitlin Rhoades, 8th graders, taught by Ms. Gray, won 4th place. Their project was a group exhibit entitled "Educating a Nation: the Library Company of Philadelphia".
- Malcolm Gifford-Weaver, a 6th grader, taught by Ms. Williams, placed in the top 6 for his individual performance entitled "Radar and Its Impact in World War II". He is also listed on the state website as receiving the "Distinguished Honor Award".
We are Johnston Proud of all of these students!
